What to Look for in Buying 5 Cup Rice Cookers

Everyone in our house loves rice. We love it. We’re very picky about our rice. My husband complains when I serve him rice that’s too sticky. My kid complains when I give him rice that’s too dry. We used to have a 3 cupper, but it disappointed us.

My concern is size. We have insatiable appetite for great rice, so it’s not a good idea to have a smaller rice cooker. Thanks God, my mom persuaded me to buy an Aroma 5 cup rice cooker as a present. Here are some features to consider when choosing 5 cup rice cookers.

Size

A friend was very dismayed when she used her newly bought a 5cup rice cooker. She’s so confident about the cooker’s capacity so she tried to cook 5 cups of rice. She left it to do some chores, confident that the rice cooker would do the rest. But when she returned, the rice cooker was spilling some water. The rice cooker made a complete mess on her counter.

So when you’re buying a 5 cup rice cooker, read the specs very carefully. Be aware that you’re buying a ‘5 cups dry’ or ‘5 cups cooked’ rice cooker. They are hugely different.

All-aroundness

Your 5 cup rice cooker should be versatile. If you’re living a healthy life, you might want a rice cooker that allows you to prepare healthy meals. The rice cooker must also have the capability to steam vegetables and seafood and cook stews or soups, in addition to making the best rice.

Cleaning ease

When getting a 5 cup rice cooker, ensure that it’s parts are easy to clean. Some cookers make a huge mess since the rice bubbles up, reaching the steam vent. Stay away from these rice cookers. Choose one that has a lid that barely needs washing. Look for a 5 cup rice cooker that mixes great engineering with nice features, while making it dishwasher-friendly.

Programmability

Programmability is a good feature if you’re a very busy person. These features save you time and effort going back and forth to check the rice cooker. Higher-end 5 cup rice cookers sport some features like extended keep warm and delayed start. Many also have settings for various types of rice.

Design

Make sure that your 5 cup rice cooker looks good on your counter. Choose a cooker that fits your counter well. The rice cooker you get should blend in with the kitchen design.
