How To Organize Your Recipes

Most of us who do any amount of cooking will have untidy collections of recipes. They may include cookbooks, recipes torn from magazines or cut from packaging, recipes printed out from the internet, and handwritten recipe cards with family favorites. How do you organize them so you can actually find the recipes you want?

Get one or two big binders, a box of page protectors, and a few packages of dividers from the school supplies section of the local shop. You can put all your recipes from magazines, packages and the printer into these handy page protectors. The page protectors not only keep them organized in the binder, they protect the recipe from spills and grease while you cook.

You can get special page protectors built for index cards to hold all your old family recipes that have been shared on traditional recipe cards. These pages will protect all the handwritten recipes you have gotten from your grandmothers, mothers, cousins and so on. Organize the cards so all the soup recipes are together, the cake recipes are together; you get the idea.

Create your categories. Besides meat, poultry, breakfast, cookies, and so on, you can create subcategories to divide specialties in each category. For example, in your appetizer category, you may want to have summer appetizer recipes grouped together so you can find all the great foods you can make with seasonal produce for your summer barbecues.
