How To Organize Your Recipes

Most of us who do any amount of cooking will have untidy collections of recipes. They may include cookbooks, recipes torn from magazines or cut from packaging, recipes printed out from the internet, and handwritten recipe cards with family favorites. How do you organize them so you can actually find the recipes you want?

Get one or two big binders, a box of page protectors, and a few packages of dividers from the school supplies section of the local shop. You can put all your recipes from magazines, packages and the printer into these handy page protectors. The page protectors not only keep them organized in the binder, they protect the recipe from spills and grease while you cook.

You can get special page protectors built for index cards to hold all your old family recipes that have been shared on traditional recipe cards. These pages will protect all the handwritten recipes you have gotten from your grandmothers, mothers, cousins and so on. Organize the cards so all the soup recipes are together, the cake recipes are together; you get the idea.

Create your categories. Besides meat, poultry, breakfast, cookies, and so on, you can create subcategories to divide specialties in each category. For example, in your appetizer category, you may want to have summer appetizer recipes grouped together so you can find all the great foods you can make with seasonal produce for your summer barbecues.

Holiday appetizers would contain all the recipes that you love to make during the holiday season. They would include old family favorites and new recipes that contain all those delicious holiday spices.

Make ahead appetizers need their own subcategory so you can turn right to them when you are planning your next get together. You can make a bunch of these up the day or two before your party and enjoy it stress free when your friends all come over.

If you are familiar with computer databases, you can also list each recipe in a database file. This would allow you to cross-reference recipes that may serve dual purposes, such as a holiday appetizer that you can make ahead of time. This takes some time to input all your data, but once it is done, searching through your recipes is a piece of cake. It also pays to have a printed copy of everything in your binder, however, as once you have searched your database and decided on a recipe, it can be inconvenient to keep running back to the computer to read the recipe while you cook.

For your cookbooks, take a few moments and organize them by topic. Perhaps you have some Chinese cookbooks, some beginner cookbooks, and some vegetarian cookbooks. Put each category together to make selections easier.

A good tip is to keep sticky notes on hand near your recipes. If you make an alteration or find a mistake in the recipe, make a quick note and stick it to the recipe page. This works well in cookbooks and binders. The next time you make that recipe, you will see your note and remember what you did before.
