The Slow Cooker’s History

The slow cooker’s origin is not from long ago.. The electric bean cooker was initially made in the beginning of the 1960s by the “West Bend Corporation”. The Bean pot was initially introduced as a cooker. It was basically a crock pot on a tray that heated up. Actually, the first true forrunner of slow cookers was the Beanery. The one responsible for developing it is the “Naxon Utilities Corporation”.

In the year 1970, Rival Industries bought Naxon, which also gave them the rights for the Beanery. Rival’s exploration into the slow cookers’ world had begun. With the same method, the company found that many types of foods cooked magnificently. Once this was discovered 25,000 cookers were brought out and sold to the public as the first official Crock-Pot during 1971.

With this product, in the year 1974, its inside crock could be removed for cleaning in which became another innovation. Also people were encouraged to save energy. This was easy when using the low-wattage Crock-Pot.

Rival started to show career-oriented women on how to easily fix meals with their slow cooker. Cooking a meal while away at work was appealing to working women and the Rival very much knew it. In the middle of the 70s, different versions were made by other companies. Although, a lot of them are no longer around.

With its slow cooker, Rival stays the leader in the market today. They command a large part of the market which is 85 percent. In each different types, a variety of sizes is offered. Over the years, these models have proved to be extremely useful.

They come up with timers and automatic controls to help effectively do their cooking. Many cookbooks have even been written chock full of meal recipes specifically for the cookers of today.

Today, a lot of new brands of cooker emerge but the Rival Slow Cookers are still the the best known. For larger families, you can look for deluxe large-size models. From beef stew to chuck roast, you can cook everything in them.

It’s great for any one-pot meal like spaghetti sauce and chili and other related recipes. Everyone has such a busy life these days the slow cooker is used on a daily basis in some homes.

You can find them ranging from a 16-ounce size up to a 7.size of 4 quarts. This is the dimension of the crock. Others have a warming setting but mostly have various heat settings for cooking on high or low. The low setting heats things to a temperature of 170 degrees Fahrenheit with the high setting heating food to 190 degrees to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

It is also needed to have a certain amount of liquid to cook food accurately.. Its amount differs depending on what type you are cooking.. On this matter, there are cookbook’s instructions and the operating instructions that come with the manual wherein you can follow..

Another innovation that has happened with slow cookers is that of the rice cooker. The Special rice cookers are basically an offshoot of original slow cookers. So the history goes on for the very convenient cooking tool.

Top Crock Pot Ingredients for Your Pantry

The best thing about slow cooking is the way that you can throw a delicious meal together with just a few ingredients from the store cupboard.

Your slow cooker will pay for itself easily. The time saving as you are making a meal makes it priceless. But, if you intend to make slow cooking part of your regular meal times, then it pays to have a few staples to keep in your cupboards to make meal planning easy.

Beans – Beans are a very economical source of protein that cook very well in slow cookers . Beans have their own individual flavor which can be enhanced by the herbs or spices you use when cooking them. Beans can make a meal base when you cook them with meat or even be the main ingredient if you are a vegetarian who wants to make a simple and speedy dish. Whether borlotti, lentil, haricot, or black-eyed, beans can be the start of some fantastic slow cooker dishes.

Fibrous Vegetables – For starters, these means good old spuds and the average kitchen has at least a few potatoes lurking around in the vegetable rack.  They are a really versatile food. Mash them, fry them, stew them, or chuck them in the crockpot. Potatoes add thickening to stews, soups, and meat-free meals. Potatoes and other fibrous veggies like carrots, swede and turnips, take a time to cook, so they can be thrown in the slow cooker with meat and can cook for a long time.

Fresh Herbs – Using herbs can dramatically change the flavour of almost any meal you make. Herbs can also be bought dried, but they release a much better flavor if they are added to the crockpot fresh. You can even grow your own fresh herbs in the house in small pots on your kitchen window sill. All you need is a nice sunny spot, some compost, and remember to water them regularly. Herbs you’ve grown yourself can even be dried to extend their life, making them easy to keep around without worrying about wasting them. Remember to add your herbs near the end of the crockpot cooking time so the flavor infiltrates the cooked meal and doesn’t disappear during the cooking time.
